To mark the release of the latest Weil European Distress Index – now featuring an inaugural future forecasting element – Senior European Restructuring Partner and Co-Head of Weil’s London Restructuring Practice, Andrew Wilkinson, appeared on CNBC TV’s Squawk Box Europe.
During the segment, Andrew discussed the current state of corporate distress across Europe and highlighted key challenges businesses will face in 2025, based on the report’s new forecast.
Andrew delved into the findings, noting “the elevated level of corporate distress we saw in Q4 2024 will endure throughout 2025”. He discussed the uncertainty surrounding the relative base case compared to the more optimistic outlook, highlighting Germany as the focal point of European distress. Andrew also emphasised that a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine could have a positive impact on reducing distress levels across the region.
Andrew also appeared on BBC News’ Business Today programme. He provided an overview of the current distress landscape, highlighting Germany as a notable outlier. Andrew examined the sector rankings, outlining the contrasting scenarios across industries. He noted the relative strength of the UK’s services sector, which is faring better than Europe’s industrial sector – the hardest hit by current challenges.
