Weil Patent Litigation and Life Sciences practices Co-Head Edward Reines and Technology & IP Transactions partner Karen Ballack have been profiled among the “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” in California for 2022 by the Daily Journal.
The Daily Journal noted that Edward had three major jury trial wins in seven months, including a major jury verdict for client CareDx, Inc. against competitor Natera Inc. in Delaware federal court. The jury found that Natera intentionally and willfully engaged in false advertising in the promotion of its kidney transplant rejection assessment test, and awarded CareDx $21.2 million in compensatory damages and $23.7 million in punitive damages. The publication also mentioned Edward’s work for notable clients, including Illumina, Inc., Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., Archer DX LLC, HP Inc., LiquidPower Specialty Products Inc. and Guardant Health, Inc.
Karen was recognized for her intellectual property transactional experience in a wide variety of industries including software, internet, hardware, semiconductors, life science and medical devices. The Daily Journal noted her oversight on the IP side of a large transaction involving the sale of computer chip manufacturer Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. to its former rival company, Analog Devices, Inc., resulting in a combined enterprise valued at $68 billion. Also highlighted was her work on a $25 million (plus future royalties) patent litigation settlement on behalf of Guardant Health, Inc. – an oncology company focused on cancer-related blood tests – and Foundation Medicine, Inc., a subsidiary of Roche.
