Biography

Karen Chao is a partner in Weil’s Private Funds practice and is based in New York. Karen advises alternative asset managers in the formation and structuring of private equity and other private investment fund vehicles. Karen also advises private equity sponsors on operational, regulatory, governance and other ongoing life of fund and sponsor matters, including advising clients on issues relating to the Investment Advisers Act and the Investment Company Act. Karen also advises sponsors and certain institutional investors in connection with secondary transactions involving interests in private equity funds, including fund restructurings, continuation funds and purchases of portfolios of fund interests. Karen has also represented prominent sovereign wealth funds and state pension funds in connection with their investments in private investment vehicles, including separate and managed accounts.
Karen’s representative clients include Brookfield, Neuberger Berman, Franklin Templeton, Serena Ventures, PineBridge Investments, ICONIQ, Halstatt Capital and UBS.
Prior to joining Weil, Karen was a partner at another international law firm.
Karen received her LL.B, with first class honors, from the University of Sydney and her B.A., with first class honors, from Queen’s University.
