Weil Adds Former SEC Leader Andrew Dean in New York

NEW YORK, January 21, 2025: International law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP announced today that Andrew Dean has joined the Firm as a partner in the nationwide Securities Litigation and White Collar Defense, Regulatory and Investigations practices, based in the New York office. Andrew will advise clients on internal and government investigations and enforcement actions, as well as related civil litigation and compliance-related issues.

Andrew joins Weil from his role as Co-Chief of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Enforcement Division’s Asset Management Unit (AMU), a national enforcement unit that focuses on misconduct by financial institutions, where he oversaw a nationwide staff of attorneys and industry experts. During his tenure, the AMU brought some of the largest and most consequential SEC enforcement actions involving investment advisers to private funds, registered investment companies and retail accounts, including investigations into alleged conflicts of interest, violations of Regulation Best Interest, “AI Washing,” misleading marketing and prohibited joint transactions, among other issues. Before his time in the AMU, Andrew spent eight years in the SEC’s New York Office conducting investigations covering the waterfront, including public companies, broker-dealers and investment banks.

“We are thrilled to welcome Andrew, one of the nation’s leading authorities on the law governing investment advisers, investment companies and private funds, to our partnership,” said Weil Executive Partner Barry Wolf. “He brings a wealth of practical experience from the government and private practice that will help our private equity fund clients navigate the current regulatory environment.”

“Andrew is one of very few government decision makers who has brought SEC enforcement actions against private funds advisers, registered investment companies, banks and broker-dealers during the past two administrations,” said Jonathan Polkes, Co-Chair of Weil’s global Litigation Department. “He will be in an excellent position to advise clients that operate in this space across the full array of complex state and federal securities investigations.”

“Andrew will partner with our private funds group to offer 360-degree coverage of our clients’ legal needs – including fund formation, deal execution, compliance program development, self-reporting, regulatory examinations and government investigations and litigation,” said John Neuwirth and Caroline Zalka, Co-Heads of Weil's nationwide Securities Litigation practice.

“It’s a great pleasure to join Weil’s world-class Securities Litigation and White Collar teams,” Andrew noted. “I can’t imagine a better place to apply my experience as we work to help clients resolve their most demanding, high-stakes matters.  I’m looking forward to working alongside my new colleagues after the privilege of government service.”
